About IGCSE History
Welcome to Grade 9 IGCSE History! In this course, we will be covering Europe in the 20th century, from the end of World War 1 up until the fall of the Soviet Union. At the end of the course, you will sit for three papers (see Plan of Study) which are externally written and moderated.
I conduct the class in a manner that places a large amount of responsibility on you, the student. This is intended to prepare you for the intensive Diploma Programme course, so there is a certain rigor involved. This will be more challenging than Grade 8, and certainly more challenging than what you have encountered in Grade 7. You are officially upper year students now, and that comes with a whole new set of expectations from our school community.
Please keep these things in mind:
1) You are expected to meet all deadlines; the course work moves too rapidly for students to be skipping assignments or not completing the assigned reading. There is quite simply not enough time in the year for us to cover everything in class. Much of our work will be done in the flipped classroom model.
2) It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the syllabus located in your Google Drive folder (located in links) and the classroom expectations.
3) You need to come prepared and on time each and every day-see classroom policies.
4) You must learn to advocate for yourself. Please take the initiative and see me if you encounter any problems.
5) 90% of the time, hard work beats talent. You may not have any interest in History, and therefore think it is not important to do well. Believe me when I say that all of your IGCSE classes this year will help you develop skills to excel in the topics that you are interested in. It is about skill building just as much as it is about content.
6) Pay close attention to the Germany Depth Study, and watch the hyperlinks in the Focus Questions and the reading list. Part of the flipped Classroom model will need you to watch the videos and take a brief quiz at the beginning of each class.
7) All students must have the following at the beginning of each class: An approved device, a notebook or a binder with A4 paper, pen and or/pencil, and a red pen for correction and peer moderation. Note: You will be turning in your notebook to me on a regular basis for progress checks; I will not accept any single pieces of paper under most circumstances. When you complete a quiz or a response question, you will turn in the entire notebook, so please have a separate notebook just for G9 History.
